Firefox 6 Tips: Enable Google Toolbar In Firefox 5 & Firefox 6

In the series of Firefox tips here is a new one to offer. As we know that Firefox 6 is already available for download before its final release, we started testing few tricks to make Firefox 6 better. Few weeks ago Google discontinued its support for Google Toolbar on Firefox 5 and higher versions. Firefox 4 users can still use Google Toolbar without facing any problem.

Firefox 6 Google Toolbar

However Firefox 5 and Firefox 6 users can still use Google Toolbar. Since Google stopped providing support for Google Toolbar in higher versions of Firefox so Firefox automatically disables the toolbar add-on. In order to use the Google Toolbar in Firefox 5 and Firefox 6, you have to follow the below mentioned steps.

Enable or Run Google Toolbar in Firefox 5 and Firefox 6

  • Install the add-on and restart Firefox.

NOTE: Google won’t allow you to download and install Google Toolbar directly from their website. To download Google Toolbar on your Firefox 5 and Firefox 6 follow the link given above.

Firefox 6 Google Toolbar Compatibility

  • After installation you would be able to use Google Toolbar on Firefox 5 and Firefox 6.

After our rigorous tests, we didn’t find any issue using Google Toolbar on Firefox 6. Firefox will keep sending the incompatible add-on message but it will not affect the usage anyhow. For any other Firefox tips or tricks, leave your comments.

Thank YOU!

The Add-on “Compatibility Reporter” is not necessary! Just edit the max.Version in your extension file “install.rdf”. Have a look at this tutorial: http://www.websupport24.com/solution-google-toolbar-mozilla-firefox-5 – Works perfect for me with Toolbar 7.1.20110512W Versions…!

That’s a really good tip. Thanks for sharing it with our readers. :)

Excellent, thanks!!

My only interest in the Toolbar is to have access to Page Rank – but that still does not work.

Thank you !!!!!
It’s working perfectly!!!

For version 6.02 that tool doesn’t work at all. I did as “Web Support” said and the google tool bar works a treat! That link noted above to install google toolbar refused to install it. So, I coped the entire google toolbar directory from a firefox backup directory I still had and then edited the install.rdf file to maxversion 8.0
Works perfect. Ric

BTW, the way I could identify the google toolbar directory was that the LICENSE.TXT file in it identified that it was for the google toolbar. That is your clue as to which directory to copy to your new extentions directory. Edit that file, then start firefox. Fun to see if congratulate me on my install.

This seems to partially work for 6.0.2. The toolbar shows up. I click the “Sign in”. Enter my username/password in the https://accounts.google.com dialog and sign in. I come back to the main Firefox window but the “Sign in” light (little orb/circle to the left) doesn’t turn green and my customized toolbar layout doesn’t load.

If I click Bookmarks on the toolbar all I get is “Sign in to access your Google bookmarks”. I click that and I get the https://accounts.google.com dialog but my username is already entered. I reenter my password, it accepts it, but no green light and the Bookmarks still says I need to log in.

I was running Firefox 5 with maxVersion hack in the install .rdf and the login stuff wasn’t working in Firefox 5 so I upgraded to Firefox 6.0.2 to see if things would start to work.

Could Google be blocking or not servicing toolbar requests from Firefox 5 or higher now?

BasicTheProgram – I get the same issue as you now that my FF has been updated. Hopefully mroe info will be forthcoming. I only use the toolbar for Bookmarks, a feature I find very useful.

biggie September 13, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I have the same problem like the last 2 commenters. I will give up using firefox OR google (bookmarks) if and when I’ll figure it out which one is to blame for curent situation.
I believe firefox is the evil one here given the fact that they want people to use their latest feature “firefox sync”. If this is true then I find this markenting stunt to be a miserable move. Shame on you (you know who you are).

googlebookmark September 13, 2011 at 8:52 pm

Google bookmarks was also the main reason I used the toolbar. I’ve read that Gmarks is a firefox add-on that is a good replacement. I haven’t tried it yet (plan to), but the reviews look promising. Google ‘gmarks’ or here’s the link to the Firefox 6/7 compatible version of Gmarks: http://code.google.com/p/gmarks/downloads/detail?name=Gmarks-1.0.3.3.xpi

What BasicTheProgram had said is true for all versions of firefox. I tried 3.6.22 firefox the same problem. The earlier work around for the issues were

1. Cannot have Gmail Notifier app installed.
2. Make sure to allow cookies accepted from google.

BOTH DID NOT WORK. I have also submitted the problem to google with firefox 3.6.22 on Windows 7 x64.

The toolbar works fine on IE9. The sign in turns green and automatically signs in.

Google Toolbar – Bookmarks – Login issue in Firefox 6.0.2 solved.

It is due to change in google login link.
The solution given at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/875112
works perfect.

Sir, I love you. Thank you so much.

RAX September 24, 2011 at 12:07 am

Thanks a lot for this information. The solution ABC posted worked great (I started getting that problem yesterday). The RDF trick is nice to know about, although I personally use the compatibility reporter method.

Also, for those who don’t want to make these changes themselves, I made this unofficial version of GTB:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40374191/gtb7_ff_BUGFiX_Unofficial.xpi

It’s GTB 7.1.20110512W for Firefox with the Sign-on fix (ABC’s link) and install.RDF fix (Web Support’s link) already in it. It shows as version “7.1.20110512W (Unofficial)” in the add-on manager. Should install on all FF versions up to 8.0, but was only tested on 6.0.2.

Kazuaki Shimazaki September 25, 2011 at 6:43 am

Thanks, RAX. The thing now works about as well as it could on Firefox 6. But Google Translate now doesn’t seem to recognize when a page has finished loading and there are a few more areas left untranslated than before.

Further the New Tab function doesn’t work. The rest seems to work OK.

Peter Hansen September 26, 2011 at 6:58 pm

After I installed the reporter and the toolbar, the URL in the address bar no longer changed along with the page when I clicked a link; It was stuck on whatever page I had been on unless I typed in a new address or opened a new tab. I removed both of them, restarted my computer, and the address bar worked fine. I installed them again to be sure, and the same thing happened.

Jeannette September 28, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Thanks RAX Google toolbar 100% OK

RAX September 29, 2011 at 3:49 am

@Kazuaki Shimazaki: The New Tab issue has always bothered me too. I used to use it as both my new tab and my home page…it’s the feature I miss most. There’s an addon that’s very similar in appearance and function though, called “New Tab Jumpstart”. If you liked GTB’s feature, you’ll like it.

As for Translate, the “Automatic” translating stopped working, but using “Page Info->Translate Page into English” from the context menu works fine. I’ve never noticed an issue with there being more untranslated content, so not sure about that one.

@Peter: What version of FF and what other addons do you have installed? If you have FF7, did it work when had FF6/5?
