It’s a well-known fact that the more software you install on your Windows machine, the longer it takes time to start. This is all because those programs add themselves to the startup programs list. So whenever your system is booted it takes longer time to get started. Although we shared a list of tricks to increase boot speed in Windows 7 but in this post we would specifically tell you how to disable startup programs in Windows.
How To Disable Start Program in Windows
It is highly essential to have some programs start as Windows start like antivirus, firewall, sound manager, graphic suit, etc. but other than these only waste resources and extend the boot time or start up time. You can control these programs from getting started during Windows startup. For this there is an inbuilt Windows program named MSConfig.
MSConfig is a system controlling utility and it allows controlling programs running at startup. It is available in Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 also. To disable programs at startup in Windows you have to follow these steps:
- Open Start menu and then type msconfig.exe in search box. While you type it, the result would display msconfig.exe. Click on it. (For Windows XP, open RUN and then type msconfig. Then hit Enter.)
- Once System Configuration window is open, click on startup tab. From the list of programs deselect those programs which you want to prevent from loading at Windows startup. Click OK after making your choice.
- As soon as you click OK, a dialogue box will appear asking you to restart computer for the changes to take effect. You can also choose to restart later.
This is how you can use inbuilt MSConfig tool to control startup programs in Windows. There are few programs which solve the same purpose. Our personal favorite is CCleaner. If you don’t have CCleaner then download it and install on your system.
In CCleaner interface you have to click on Tools button on the left side and then click on Startup to get the list of programs loading at startup. To disable any program first select it and then click on disable button present on the right side. You can also enable the programs which have been disabled.
NOTE: CCLeaner never prompts to restart your machine. Kindly do it yourself.
CCleaner is free software, although if you want a priority technical support then you have to purchase it by paying $24.95.
There are other programs also which can be used to disable startup programs in Windows. Which program do you use? Tell us through comments.
